Roselle Park standout wrestler Benner captures his first Region 3 title; On his way to compete in this weekend's NJSIAA Tournament in Atlantic City

When wrestlers have their arms lifted by the referees after winning a state tournament match, it means something special.
It means that that wrestler has just beaten one of the very best.
The NJSIAA Tournament at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall commences Friday with the preliminaries and pre-quarterfinals; continues Saturday with
the quarterfinals, wrestlebacks and semifinals and then concludes
Sunday with more wrestlebacks and the finals.
Union County will be represented by 17 grapplers who advanced out of Region 3 in Union,
which concluded all day this past Saturday after competition was snowed
out on Friday.
Winning Region 3 titles were Joe Giaccio and Joe Brady of Cranford, Dan Ries of Brearley and Russell Benner of Roselle Park.
Placing second were Dan Pisauro of Roselle Park, Tristan Bundy of Scotch
Plains, Devin Geoghegan of Brearley, Dennis Carroll of Roselle Park,
Dawud Hicks of Plainfield, Frank Colder of Governor Livingston and
Urayoan Garcia of Rahway.
Qualifying after winning third-place consolation matches were Christian Barber of Westfield, Diego Chavez of
Rahway, John Balboni of Brearley, Vic Pozsonyi of Roselle Park, Khusen
Taramov of Brearley and Zach Troutman of New Providence.
Giaccio, Brady, Ries and Benner captured their first Region 3 titles. Brady was
second at heavyweight and Giaccio fourth at 112 last year. Benner was
second at 130 two years ago.
