The Roselle Park wrestling team - which set a school record for wins in a season with 21 - saw another fine campaign come to an end at the Ritacco Center at Toms River North in Toms River.
The North 2 champion Panthers were downed by South Jersey champ Paulsboro 37-21 in Sunday (Feb. 14) morning's Group 1 semifinals. Roselle Park wrestled Paulsboro for the first time since 2004 and was seeking to reach the Group 1 final for the first time since 2003.
The Panthers finished 21-3 and will now turn their attention toward trying to repeat as District 10 champions next weekend at Millburn.
North 1 champion Newton defeated Central Jersey champ Robbinsville 39-21 in Sunday's other Group 1 semifinal. Later Sunday at Ritacco, defending champion Paulsboro and Newton will meet in the Group 1 final for the second consecutive season.
Paulsboro has won 26 of the first 28 Group 1 finals since the present format was instituted for the 1981-1982 season. Roselle Park won the first one in 1982, shared the 1997 title with Paulsboro and Kittatinny won the 2008 crown.
Roselle Park jumped out to a 15-0 lead on Paulsboro before the South Jersey power won its first match by decision and then took over.
The Panthers lost to South Jersey champion Collingswood 39-25 in the 2008 Group 1 semifinals and to Newton 30-29 in the 2009 semis. Roselle Park captured Central Jersey, Group 1 those seasons.
